YOUTH HAVENS OFFERS VIRTUAL YOGA

Naples, FL (April 17, 2020)

With 73 beds for children and teens ages 6 – 19 that have been removed from their home due to abuse, abandonment, neglect or are homeless, Youth Haven has been offering yoga classes on its therapeutic campus since November 2013. The classes are taught by volunteers Gina Monteiro, Victoria Moore and Skylar Rosas. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Youth Haven closed its campus to all outside visitors but found a way to continue its weekly yoga session through virtual classes. The virtual classes allow the instructors to provide positive insights and guide the students into proper pose alignment with verbal cues and on-screen demonstrations.

Many of the children that arrive at Youth Haven are traumatized, in need of immediate counseling and a place where they feel safe. Our Yoga program is an extension of our therapy program. All classes include breath work, guided relaxation, positive affirmations to replace negative thinking, and yoga postures for balance, strength, flexibility, and focus.

The classes are fun and age appropriate. In a recent virtual class for our elementary school-aged children, the teachers wore silly hats and practiced bunny breath, bumblebee breath, snake breath, and elephant breath together. Yoga class should be a fun time for them and the instructors encourage them to express themselves creatively in class.

When asked why it’s important that they continue with the yoga classes during this time, Gina Monteiro responded, “We feel that yoga is a practice, and one must continue the practice to evolve.  We share with the students that when we are on our mats we are practicing respecting ourselves as well as others. On our mats we are practicing the choice for peace, love, positivity, and courage. In yoga we choose connection and community instead of fear and separation.  The world is practicing isolation right now, but isolation does not need to mean separation. We come together to practice as a community, and if that means going virtual to continue our yoga together then we are all for it!”

“Our children and teens have been severely traumatized and we strive to provide them with a sense of normalcy in their lives,” said Jinx Liggett, Youth Haven Executive Director. “We’re so grateful that we have found a way to continue our yoga classes virtually and our volunteer yoga instructors are committed making this transition successful. Yoga is such an instrumental part of our therapeutic campus and our kids simply love the classes!”

THE HUNGER & HOMELESS COALITION OF COLLIER COUNTY SUPPORTS YOUTH HAVEN

Naples, FL (April 15, 2020)

With the launch of virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Youth Haven ran into a shortage of computers for the children and teens that call Youth Haven home. Upon learning of Youth Haven’s obstacles, The Hunger & Homeless Coalition of Collier County provided a solution by purchasing 30 new laptops for Youth Haven’s children and teens. The laptops will be used for both virtual learning and other academic reasons. With beds for up to 73 children and teens that have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment or neglect, 16 of those designated for homeless teenagers (Rob’s Group Home), this donation will allow each child to successfully meet their education requirements in a timely manner.

Michael Overway, Hunger & Homeless Coalition of Collier County Executive Director, stated, “I wanted to make sure our children have the tools to succeed during these difficult times. Hunger & Homeless Coalition of Collier County is donating to our wonderful Collier County’s Continuum of Care partner!”

“We’re so grateful for the donation of laptops so our children and teens can be successful in their virtual learning endeavors,” said Jinx Liggett, Youth Haven Executive Director. “The Hunger & Homeless Coalition of Collier County is an amazing partner!”

MCNALLY SUPPORTS YOUTH HAVEN

Naples, FL (April 14, 2020)

Youth Haven recently received a donation of 30 pizzas from California Pizza Kitchen to feed its children and teens and the staff that cares for them. The donation was arranged by Madison McNally in partnership with the Waterside Shops. McNally is the cofounder and program director of the Trailblazer Academy at the STARability Foundation. A member of Young Professionals of Naples and Associate Leadership Collier’s class of 2020, McNally has also been featured in Gulfshore Business magazine’s 40 under 40.

While Youth Haven has closed its campus to volunteers and visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic, we remain committed to being a lifeline of support, with 73 beds available, for abused, abandoned, and homeless children and teens. The unexpected need to increase staff and purchase additional food and other necessities has put a strain on our budget; however, we’re committed to doing whatever is necessary to provide the same level of exemplary care to our children and teens.

“We’re so grateful for the outpouring of support we have received for our children and teens from supporters such as Madison McNally and Waterside Shops. The donation of food for our kids and the staff that cares for them is so appreciated. Youth Haven is their home where they’re protected, cared for, and a place where their healing begins,” said Jinx Liggett, Youth Haven Executive Director.

EASTER BUNNY VISITS YOUTH HAVEN THANKS TO COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Naples, FL (April 13, 2020)

While Covid-19 has delayed many things, one thing that was unaffected was the Easter Bunny finding the time to visit the children and teens of Youth Haven. With the help of our community partners at Talis Park, TwinEagles Cares Club, STARability Foundation and Waterside Shops, the children and teens of Youth Haven woke up on Sunday, April 12th to Easter baskets full of fun activities, trinkets and candy. Later in the day, they participated in a massive Easter Egg hunt on our 24-acre campus.

“Our children and teens have been severely traumatized and we strive to provide them with a sense of normalcy in their lives,” said Jinx Liggett, Youth Haven Executive Director. “Thanks to the donations of our caring community members, our youth were able to enjoy the fun spirit of the holiday and take their minds off the current situation. We are grateful to everyone who donated to make this Easter extra special for all of our children and teens.”

YOUTH HAVEN ADDRESSES COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES

Naples, FL (April 2, 2020)

With social restrictions in place due to COVID-19, Youth Haven addressed communication challenges that faced the children and teens that call Youth Haven home. With school campuses closed until May 1, 2020 and Youth Haven’s campus closed to outside visitors, it was of utmost importance to have a continuity plan in place.

Hunger & Homeless Coalition of Collier County was contacted and generously purchased 30 new laptops for Youth Haven’s children and teens. The laptops will be used for virtual learning and other academic reasons. Thanks to a prior donation from the Elizabeth K. Galeana Foundation, each child and teen now has a Kindle Fire that allows for video visits with the youth’s case managers, therapists, the psychiatrist, and any additional approved visits.

Michael Overway, Homeless & Hunger Coalition Executive Director, stated, “I wanted to make sure our children have the tools to succeed during these difficult times. Hunger & Homeless Coalition is donating to our wonderful Collier County’s Continuum of Care partner!”

“We’re so grateful for the donation of laptops so our children and teens can be successful in their virtual learning endeavors. With Youth Haven being a therapeutic campus, communication with their case managers and others is also crucial so the Kindles have proven to be a huge asset,” said Jinx Liggett, Youth Haven Executive Director. “Hunger & Homeless Coalition of Collier County and the Elizabeth K. Galeana Foundation are both amazing partners!”

YOUTH HAVEN RECEIVES GRANT FROM THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR $30,000

Naples, FL (March 3, 2020)

Youth Haven is pleased to announce it has received a $30,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Collier County. These funds will support Youth Haven’s partnership with Think:Kids: Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) for Youth program.

Youth Haven has implemented CPS, a strengths-based, neurobiologically-grounded approach to conflict resolution with traumatized children. In CPS, staff are trained to adopt the belief that children “would if they could,” and this belief, combined with an array of techniques to help children build skills, leads to improvements in behavior and other functional areas for traumatized children. The funds received from The Community Foundation of Collier County will allow Youth Haven to continue to engage with Think:Kids, a program in the Department of Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and continue to guide Youth Haven through the CPS training process.

“Youth Haven is grateful for the support it has received from The Community Foundation of Collier County, says Jinx Liggett, Youth Haven Executive Director. “This generous donation will allow our staff to continue our three-year commitment to training and coaching. We are dedicated to this culture shift for our entire campus in how we collaborate with our children & teens to reduce their challenging behaviors.”

The Community Foundation of Collier County awards annual grants through a competitive application and review process. Selected organizations receive grant dollars from the Changing Needs Fund. This Fund is made up of donors who believe in the Community Foundation’s ability to identify and grant to the most community’s most current needs.
